Bas Jan Ader: “The Artist Who Sailed Into Oblivion”

Bas Jan Ader was born on April 19, 1942 & was presumed drowned at sea at some point during 1975. As he “tried” crossing the Atlantic ocean in the smallest boat ever attempted. He’s long been considered somewhat of an artist’s artist in certain circles. Ader’s aRTw3rk - mostly film, photo, and conceptually based.. expressed/confronted loss, death, extreme sadness, and often implored the use of gravity and his own body to help illustrate the those concepts, as well as inevitabilities in life that all humans must eventually face.

Learning more about him and the tragedies and tribulations he faced throughout his entire life, such as the murder of his father by Nazi’s, has made a profound effect on me as a hyper-sensitive w3rking artist/person. So eYe have posted some thoughts, links, a video, n’ such here on my site for those of you who may be interested in similar philosophical eccentricities. -And in a brave man who was willing to make the ultimate sacrifices in order to express some of the deepest of human conditions, emotions, and circumstances.

There’s a solid little article about Bas Jan Ader and a post-humous exhibit that you can check out here: www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/3652223/The-artist-who-sailed-to-oblivion.html

Painting: “Building Blocks Fish For The Sun In Vain”

"Building Blocks Fish For The Sun In Vain"

Medium: Oil & Acrylic On Masonite
Size: 24″ x 48″
Date: Finished on - 3/24/2009
*You can click on the photo above for different sized views and remote linkages to them.

So this is a painting I have been w3rking on for the past 2 weeks. At first I wasn’t so keen on it, but after w3rking it and then rew3rking it for a few sessions.. the painting did eventually begin to grow on me. Tis odd how sometimes the pieces of aRt that start out kinda crummy-looking can end up being some of my better artw3rk in the end. -The ol’ ugly duckling which grows into the swan scenario.

So do ya wanna see a little bit of ol’ Gar B. in action?.. well peep this video here and get a tiny peek into my w3rld of shamanic pigment combustion!

“Building Blocks Fish For The Sun In Vain”

Iin other decent news: I’ve been feeling pretty inspired artistically, w3rking hard almost everyday, & doing some quality painting as of late. So keep yer eyes peeled and I’ll surely try to get some more stuff posted here for everybody to view and absorb.

Video: World Record Moto Jump - 396ft!

Is this what flying feels like?

There’s more info about all the recent world record attempts to break the long distance record jump on a motorcycycle over at ESPN Sports. The 400 foot barrier will fall soon.

Humanity Is Doomed - Video to prove it

Pandemonium erupted outside of an “America’s Next Top Model” casting call at CW Studios in midtown Manhattan Saturday when an overheating car triggered a stampede of human cattle. Screaming as they ran for their lives, hundreds of wannabe models in high heels toppled over barricades along W. 55th St. after several people in the crowd started yelling, “There’s a bomb!

It’s seeing things like this that’ll robb any remaining bits of hope that I may have left for humankind… Lordy!

Deerhunter - Live in Orlando!!

Quadruple Yay!!!! - I’ll be one of the few hundred fortunate souls who gets to see/hear:
Deerhunter play at the BackBooth in Orlando,FL tonight/March 10th, 2009. Their last US gig before heading off across the pond to play all kinds’a BIG music festivals n’ stuff in the European Continent.

In my humble opinion, Deerhunter is one of the premier independent rock bands playing in America these days. Especially on the psychedelic shoegaze pop tip. So to see’em in such an intimate setting is going to be raw sugar sweet. I would say I’ll try and grab some pics for ya’s to see on my Flickr account, but unfortunately my camera was stolen recently. Guess I will be taking the old fashion photographs for this show… with my actual “memory”. Heh.

Below are some videos for ya to check out: One is of a recent Deerhunter performance, there’s a look into the studio/recording process, and also a music video of the first track from their recent and completely fantabulous double album, “Microcastle”/”Weird New Era”. Purchase it on CD or Vinyl over at Kranky Records.
